What are the French plans for 2019?

In an economic and social context marked by the yellow vests crisis, Cofidis in collaboration with the CSA research institute is today publishing the results of a survey on the desires of the French in 2019.

Despite the depressed economic and social environment of recent months, the French seem to have many plans for 2019. “Despite the end of 2018 marked by strong mobilization on the issue of purchasing power, nearly half of French people plan to carry out projects during this year, a proportion slightly higher than last year ”indicates Céline François, Marketing Director of Cofidis France. They are 44% to consider projects in 2019, 28% declaring that they want to carry out more than in 2018.

What are these projects? Improving its habitat, buying equipment and going on a trip are the three priority desires of the French in 2019, according to this study. Among these three priorities, housing dominates the ranking, 33% of French people questioned refer to them.

In detail, 23% say they want to decorate their home for an average budget of 1,624 euros. The renovation of housing and the purchase of furniture concern less than 20% of those questioned. The study also shows that the French want to equip themselves with technological goods in this year 2019. High-tech products (22%) and household appliances (18%) top the ranking.

A significant proportion of French people also wish to travel, 28% of them express this wish.

But these figures come up against the question of funding. Although three in four French people say they have a clear vision of their financial capacity in 2019, 61% do not have confidence in the future regarding their income. This feeling overwhelmingly shared by seniors (73%) contrasts with the optimism of those under 35. Suddenly, with 58% of favorable responses, young people are “the category of French people who plan to lead the most projects in 2019” underlines the survey. For their part, seniors are clearly less enterprising: less than a third of them plan to lead projects in 2019.

Faced with these projects, the “lack of funding” appears to be the main obstacle to their achievements. Thus, 15% of the population questioned (8 million people) plan to take out consumer credit with variations depending on the project. For the purchase of a new car 51% of French people take out a loan while 34% of them plan it for a used car. The lack of savings (24%) or its complement (28%) are the main reasons given for calling on credit.
