The State relies on start-ups to encourage waste sorting

The Ministry of Transition wants to encourage the French to sort their packaging better and rewards innovative initiatives in this area. Six million euros will be allocated to around 20 projects between 2018 and 2022.

“My passion in life is garbage cans!” confessed Brune Poirson, Secretary of State at the Ministry for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition, at the launch of a call for tenders on packaging collection solutions. While France shows poor performance in terms of waste collection, the government is joining forces with Ademe, the Environment and Energy Management Agency, and Citeo, the body responsible for waste management. packaging waste, to experiment with new practices. The government’s objective of recycling 100% of plastic by 2025 is ambitious because today less than half of French people systematically sort their packaging.

The three players thus come together to select innovative collection solutions and finance their development. “All the options are on the table”, underlines Jean Hornain, director of Citeo, who is releasing a budget of 6 million euros to support some twenty projects between 2018 and 2022. The three players will distinguish the solutions that can be extended to the whole of France.

Applicants will have to deploy solutions that encourage solidarity or collaborative collection, in particular in areas where sorting is still lagging behind. “The collection rates in France are very disparate with very efficient rural areas which reach around 70% of packaging collection against 40% in the city”, specifies Jean Hornain.

Waste crisis in France

“We want to launch a whole incentive economy. The objective is to reward good behavior, ”explains Brune Poirson. The Secretary of State notably cited the initiatives of start-ups such as Yoyo, located in disadvantaged neighborhoods, or Eugene, invited as 10 other structures by the ministry to present their solutions. , allows consumers to scan products to find out which bin to throw them in. The app even tracks the different parts of the packaging so you know what to do with each. For its part, Yoyo is deploying collection points at “ambassadors” who collect plastic bottles from citizens, in exchange for rewards based on the quantity of waste collected, convertible into cinema tickets, reduction coupons, etc. These initiatives have all their chances of being among the first projects financed and labeled “innovative collection”. The names of the first laureates will be known next spring.

The situation must change because it becomes critical, says Brune Poirson. “We are almost in a situation in France of a waste crisis. Many (of French) no longer want incinerators near their homes, and on the other hand the landfills are jam-packed. We see that we are at the end of a certain model, we have to transform the balance, ”she insisted. . A year ago, it banned the importation of a great deal of waste, thus forcing the sectors to structure themselves. A bad for a good?
