Telecom operators will be able to launch 5G in Paris

The Paris city hall and the telecoms operators have reached an agreement on the deployment of 5G “in the coming weeks”.

After some procrastination, a new charter, the City of Paris finally said “yes” to 5G. At the end of the day on Friday, the city announced that it had finalized its new mobile telephony charter, a prerequisite for the launch of the new technology. This “new Parisian mobile telephony charter will be submitted to the Paris council in March», Announced the city. The charter was signed by the four operators Bouygues Telecom, Free Mobile, Orange and SFR.

«I welcome this agreement on behalf of the operators who are members of the French Telecoms Federation (Bouygues Telecom, Orange and SFR, Editor’s note). reacted Nicolas Guérin, president of the FTTelecoms. Paris without 5G, it was a bit like imagining it without the Eiffel Tower“. The president of the federation recalls that the capital will host the Olympic Games in three years and “will therefore be on this occasion the planetary showcase of the new uses made possible thanks to 5G“. In addition, 5G is one of the obligations that must be met.

In Paris, 5G must in particular make it possible to relieve congestion on 4G networks which, like the Paris ring road, tend to jam at peak times, or in the most frequented places (except confinement or curfew). The first 5G subscribers should benefit from very high speeds, up to 2 Giga bit / s, which is even faster than optical fiber. In practice, the flow rates will be below these thresholds.

Operators ready to launch

The operators have all said they are ready to deploy 5G in Paris. In fact, they have already carried out tests in the capital and have started installing 5G antennas which have generally been added to sites hosting 2G / 3G / 4G antennas. Concretely, all they need is the green light from the City of Paris to be able to press the button. La Capitale should join in the coming weeks, probably before the end of March, the list of cities covered by the new generation of mobile telephony.

The City had launched a citizen consultation with the metropolis of greater Paris, bringing together 85 citizens who gave their opinion on the new generation of mobile telephony. This consultation was launched at the request of the Greens, who were concerned about the possible consequences of this new technology on the environment and its impact on health. The citizens were reassured.
