France’s first “zero waste” street settles in Paradise

FIGARO DEMAIN – In the 10th arrondissement of Paris, the town hall has given itself a year to transform the rue du Paradis into a model of waste management. An ambitious challenge.

In Paris, Paradise is waste-free! The street of the same name, located near the Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est, has in fact decided to become the first zero waste street in France. The challenge launched to all the inhabitants, passers-by, traders of this artery of the 10th arrondissement will run throughout the year and is part of the Climate Plan of the city of Paris. “In one week, 9 tonnes of waste are produced in this artery… That’s too much!”, Notes Léa Vasa, deputy mayor in charge of the project. In collaboration with the association zero waste Paris, the borough is thus mobilizing to reduce litter.

the best waste is the one that is not produced

“The street, which has nearly 6,000 inhabitants, constitutes an interesting laboratory insofar as it is emblematic of our district with its diversity, its shops, businesses, schools and its constraints: in particular the narrow sidewalks”, specifies the local elected official who does not no fixed targets for this year. However, the target for reducing waste by 10% is in the sights. “We are going to start by carrying out a vast awareness campaign among all the inhabitants, traders and businesses established in the street to convey the message that the best waste is that which is not produced”, specifies Léa Vasa.

“There are a lot of things that are going to happen throughout the year. Many traders are ready to accept that customers bring their containers and report it via a badge designed by the association zero waste Paris. We also offered a visit to a zero waste apartment. A volunteer from the “zero waste” association lives there and kindly lent it to us. The operation was a real success and we are considering renewing it. Certain companies like KissKissBankBank, which has a shop in the street, also agreed to become a witness office, ”adds the city councilor.

The specialist in participatory fundraising has also launched a call for projects targeted on waste reduction solutions and proposes to reduce fundraising costs by 20% for the winners. In the store, the company also offers, free of charge, an exhibition dedicated to partially funded waste reduction solutions on their site. Jean Bouteille, a specialist in returnable glass bottle solutions, Niiji, the sustainable “lunch box”, and the Toogoodtogo application, which limits food waste in restaurants, are thus highlighted.

Actors in search of concrete solutions

This slew of projects creates enthusiasm in the streets. With traders in particular where even the Franprix welcomes the initiative with kindness. Restaurants and street take-away specialists are already aware of the need to recover their waste. The Woodies café uses corn straws and biodegradable containers and, while a customer comes to pick up a surprise basket ordered via the Toogoodtogo app, the manager regrets having to throw away an astronomical quantity of peelings. The lack of space in the small cafe which serves many fruit and vegetable juices daily prevents it from installing compost in its walls. .

“We are going to organize many practical workshops to encourage residents, shops and restaurateurs to reduce their waste and tell us what their needs are. Depending on the feedback, we will gradually put in place concrete solutions. In particular, we are considering the installation of a composter in the street, why not equipped with an anaerobic digestion unit, ”answers Léa Vasa. When we know that bio-waste represents 25% of household trash … This simple and concrete solution promises to be effective.

Kefir bottles are returnable Mathilde Golla

Biocoop plans to go even further. The brand thus offers a kefir made on site sold in returnable bottles. “We want to offer other returnable drinks. We are also going to organize workshops in our walls to teach how to cook what some consider to be waste or to learn how to make your own cosmetics ”, indicates Jean-Paul Juquin, head of the Biocoop located in the street.

To encourage stakeholders to get involved in this ambitious challenge and become the “zero waste” street at the end of the year, the town hall will regularly monitor the experiment by weighing the waste collected by dump trucks. Residents will also have individual weighing grids to see the amount of waste produced. But will simple incentives be enough to convince citizens to make lasting efforts? Some traders and passers-by doubt this. , the pricing of garbage cans was one of the first measures put in place. The strong gesture then made it possible to initiate an ambitious and particularly effective policy since the city now recycles more than 80% of its waste (against 34% on average in other American cities).
