Video game: Valorant, the new bet from the creators of League of Legends

This online tactical shooter already has more than 3 million players thanks to a clever communication campaign.

For ten years, has been living on the uninterrupted success of his license, a worldwide phenomenon in the e-sport sphere. But the company decided to get out of its comfort zone by working on a new concept in a new world, a first for it. This ambition materialized in the online shooter Valuing, which could become a heavyweight of the genre. Released last week on PC, Valuing already has more than 3 million players, aided by a clever communication campaign.

“Riot has been working with specialist shooter streamers for six months now, and from our key markets.”, indicates Guillaume Rambourg, director of Riot Games France. “We did not target the biggest influencers in the sector, but the most relevant to this kind of video game.” These streamers – 25 per country – were able to try out exclusively Valuing at the beginning of the year. Their print videos, enthusiastic and posted simultaneously on Twitch and YouTube, increased the excitement among their fans.

Then Valuing passed in April and May in “Closed beta”: A limited number of people were able to play a non-final version of the game from their homes. “This allows us to test the technical infrastructure on a large scale, fix bugs and balance the difficulty”, explains Guillaume Rambourg. Riot’s partner streamers participated in the closed beta, and were mostly invited to stream their games live on the Twitch platform. What to make a huge publicity to the game to come. “Their public was able to familiarize themselves with Valorant and better understand its concept”, adds Guillaume Rambourg.

Valorant is a demanding and difficult game, in which you have to get involved “, underlines the director of Riot France. Above all, watching these videos gave you a chance to gain access to the closed beta. To be eligible, you had to watch a minimum of two hours of content on Valorant. The maneuver logically blew up the audience counters. Up to 1.7 million people simultaneously followed games of Valuing on Twitch. A total of three million beta hits were distributed in April and May. Create an e-sport ecosystem

If the launch of Valuing is successful, the hardest part now begins for Riot Games: to ensure that the enthusiasm for the game does not fall immediately. “Our games have to last over time, that’s our goal. And we aspire to develop the e-sport component of Valorant ”, indicates Guillaume Rambourg. Professional players are already preparing for this future, and have declared to give up or Overwatch to focus on the new game from Riot Games. “We are called upon by professional structures, but we do not want to rush. We will first authorize small local valorant tournaments. It will be an incubation phase ”, he continues.

Later, if the game keeps its promises, Riot intends to create his own world championship, as he did for League of Legends.
