Winter sales kick off in some departments

As every year, the traditional meeting is first given in Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Moselle and in the Vosges as well as in Guyana. But for the vast majority of other departments, it will be necessary to wait until Wednesday, January 9.

Fashion and sales enthusiasts will be able to indulge their leisure time this Wednesday… at least in eastern France. The winter sales begin on Wednesday January 2 and will run until Tuesday February 12, 2019 in. These dates coincide with those put in place in the countries bordering these departments and in particular in Luxembourg, to avoid too much competition from neighboring countries. In addition, the winter sales will begin on Saturday January 5 in Guadeloupe and end on February 15. In Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, the kick-off will be given on Wednesday January 16 (until February 26) and it will even be on Saturday May 4 in Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin (until June 14 ).

For the vast majority of other departments, it will be necessary to wait until Wednesday, January 9. This year again, the sales period will last 6 weeks and will therefore end on February 19 in a large part of mainland France. The PACTE law provided for reducing the duration of sales to four weeks from the winter 2019 edition to revitalize an operation that has been losing momentum for several years. Due to lack of time, the measure was finally not implemented.

It had also been considered to bring forward the sales period. In fact, due to the sharp loss in turnover of traders since the start of the “yellow vests” movement, the president of the Confederation of French traders, Francis Palombi, had asked to bring the start of promotions to the next level. January 2. However, Bercy did not wish to change the official start date for promotions. The federations pointed out the material difficulties – even the impossibility – of being ready on January 2. Especially since a large number of traders recruit temporary staff during sales periods.

Difficult, for the moment, to predict the success or failure of this traditional meeting. reveals that 65% of Parisian traders say they are unhappy with the results of the 2018 winter sales, a higher proportion among the self-employed than among brands that take more advantage of this period. Professionals blame the boom in the internet and the generally accepted idea that prices will be cheaper online, and more than two-thirds of them believe that sales are no longer an event for their customers. A similar proportion consider that the date of the sales is badly chosen and 55% think that the six-week period is too long. The findings have been repeated for several years, the reform proposals are discussed but they remain in the boxes.
