“Yellow vests”: appeals for help from traders in the regions

In Coutances, Normandy, Aubenas, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Toulouse, Occitanie, or even in Brittany, traders are mobilizing to try to save the holiday season.

The end of year celebrations are traditionally a period of intense activity for traders. But this year, the multiplication of demonstrations of “yellow vests” has severely penalized sales in stores. In several regions, traders tried to convince the “yellow vests” to let them work, with different methods.

Thus, in Coutances a hundred traders, small bosses and employees of downtown shops met “yellow vests” on the busy roundabouts at the entrance to the city, to ask them “to stop their movement”, reports. However, they suffered an end of inadmissibility. Protesters believe that the declines in sales observed by traders can be explained above all by the lack of purchasing power of the French and not by the blockages of the roundabout at the entrance to the city, according to comments reported by local radio. A point of agreement has however been found between traders and “yellow vests”: the latter agree not to go to the city center but they refuse, for the moment, to end the roundabouts.

In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, in Aubenas, traders also call the “yellow vests” to reason. To do this, they showed their anger in the streets of the city. They no longer “support the drop in turnover due to the occupation of the Terres de Millet roundabout”, underlines. Their short mobilization took place peacefully.

Customers called to go to stores

Faced with the same problem, in Toulouse, local authorities are mobilizing to bring customers back to the city center for this pre-holiday Saturday. Toulouse city hall and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) have thus introduced attractive parking rates with sixteen free parking spaces for three hours. The public authorities also offer traders to reimburse public transport tickets to customers, up to 12,000 “compensation” tickets each weekend to get to the city center, reports. The town hall also wants to exempt traders and artisans installed on the Christmas market from the right of place. The traders also call the “yellow vests” not to demonstrate Saturday, December 15. “It’s a cry for help,” launches the president of the Federation of Toulouse traders on the radio. According to him, the season can still be saved, provided they can work this weekend.

In Lanvollon in Brittany, traders this time managed to find common ground with the demonstrators. The “yellow vests” will free the Ponlô roundabout and settle on nearby land. The decision was taken after a meeting with traders at the town hall. The latter said in fact that since the Lanvollon roundabout is occupied by “yellow vests”, customers bypassed it and went to do their shopping elsewhere, according to. The local authorities thus offered to the protesters to make land available to them, who accepted for this weekend. However, the latter could return to their roundabout for the Christmas weekend.
