Renault sells part of its Douai site

In order to “improve its competitiveness” for its future ElectriCity electrical hub, the automotive giant will sell 148 hectares of its factory.

Renault will sell more than half of the surface area of its Douai plant, the largest in France, to the agglomeration community of Douaisis.

The Renault group and the public land establishment Nord-Pas-de-Calais (EPF) announced on Monday that they had reached an agreement on the sale of 148 hectares of the plant – out of a total area of 270 hectares – for a total amount of more than 40 million euros.“This land transaction will allow Renault ElectriCity (the name of the subsidiary dedicated to the production of electric vehicles, editor’s note) improve the compactness of its Douai site and optimize the structural and operating costs of the new entity ”, indicates the joint press release of Renault and the community.

Last week, Luciano Biondo, director of Renault’s future industrial hub in northern France, recalled that the Douai plant was only used at 8% of its capacity and that it was imperative to reduce its size. to improve its competitiveness. It is on this freed up ground that other partner companies will be able to set up. Envision, the Chinese manufacturer of electric battery cells that will supply Renault, will be able to build its factory there. Le Losange has announced its ambition to produce 400,000 electric vehicles per year by 2025. It is in Douai that it will assemble the electric Megane and the R5.

The public land establishment Nord-Pas-de-Calais will have to clean up and deconstruct the “Structures and infrastructures, in order to leave bare land free of construction”. The agglomeration will, among other things, take care of preventive archaeological excavations, “All within a limited timeframe, as requested by the project leader”. Renault had already sold a first 70-hectare plot of its factory in 2013. The operation had made it possible to expand the neighboring business park.
