Foie gras, champagne, chocolate… What the French will taste at Christmas

This year, a family of four will spend an average of 129 euros on the Christmas Eve meal, one euro less than last year.

If there is one time of the year when the French like to spice things up, it’s Christmas Eve. In 2018, a family of four will spend on average 129 euros for their meal, according to a Cofidis * study. This is roughly the same amount as in 2017.

1.5 kilo of chocolate

Each household will buy an average of 29 euros of chocolate, which is equivalent to 1.5 kilograms, of which 20% directly from artisans, to favor quality. In this area, Christmas accounts for around 10% of annual sales, twice as many as Easter, according to 2016 figures from the chocolate union.

Wine, champagne, oysters and log

Then, to fully start this New Year’s Eve, 68% of French people will appreciate wine and / or champagne, two essentials of the Christmas meal. As is seafood, which represents the biggest expense for 61% of French consumers. In addition, two-thirds plan to buy meat for the meal. Then come Christmas treats, which are also a big expense for 19% of consumers. Then, to finish the meal well, nine out of ten French people will opt for the classic Yule log.

Foie gras tasted by 86% of French people

As every year, the big winner of the Christmas meal is not surprisingly the foie gras. It will be found in the plate of 86% of the French. “We are recovering from two difficult years and therefore a lack of foie gras for French consumers”, however explains Marie Pierre Pé, general manager of the inter-professional committee of palmipeds with foie gras (Cifog). But this year, the numbers are clearly on the rise. “Next week is very important. The month of December is 60% of sales of foie gras for households ”.

It remains only to taste and enjoy the Christmas gifts, on which the French have planned to spend
