At the heart of a “barter party” where you exchange your goods without spending

VIDEO REPORT – The events where one gives and takes clothes or objects between individuals and without money are very successful. The paris-friendly site which has been organizing these fairs for 11 years has seen unprecedented enthusiasm.

This Thursday, the 200 participants of the “free barter party” are on time. At 6.30 p.m., the doors open and bargain hunters rush into the room, drop off their belongings in dedicated places and embark on a quest for objects. “It is at the beginning that we can find the most interesting pieces”, confides a regular. The traders, mostly women, appreciate the absence of money exchanges and negotiations and the idea of giving a second life to forgotten objects.

“To participate in a free barter party, you have to register on our site three days before at noon”, indicates Myriam Attias, organizer of the evenings for 11 years. “We can accommodate 200 people and last Monday at 12 noon sharp, nearly 800 people were looking to register! We were therefore disappointed and are thinking about a way to welcome more people, ”adds the co-founder of the site.

In the room, the excitement is palpable. “My things left very quickly!” rejoices Marylise who has dropped off clothes that her grandchildren no longer wear. “I did not arrive at the beginning so I may have missed something,” says the retiree who is not looking for anything specific. “I prefer to donate my items here because I know it will be useful,” adds Marylise. On the table dedicated to children’s clothing, Constance, in her thirties, searches for clothes for her 18-month-old twins. “I have left birth clothes that I no longer use and I would like to find clothes for my little girls.”

The “barter party”, a new solution for second-hand equipment

At the back of the room, the jewelry table is the object of all envy. Caroline, designer, is not looking for anything specific but could find what she is looking for. A few men are present and are busy around books or decorative objects. Jean, graphic designer, brings a suitcase of clothes that were sleeping in his cupboards and would like to find new readings.

The overwhelming majority of women concentrate on the clothing table and every item of clothing is studied in every detail before being adopted. “I want to find a little pearl!” Olga laughs after dropping off a large suitcase of clothes. The town planner came with his family above all to “empty his cupboards”. For her part, Valérie, sales manager for a large company, achieved her objective: “to find objects to decorate her new apartment”. She leaves with a tea set, a lamp and also some clothes. The one who consumes second-hand for 20 years affirms that “sites like eBay or leboncoin are no longer a solution: either the objects are of too poor quality, or people display prohibitive prices”. She therefore chooses to go to the “barter party” to dress and decorate her house.

An hour after the start of hostilities, bargain hunters had deserted the premises and the tables remained covered with many goods. “We took stock: a total of 3,083 objects were brought in and 1,928 recovered. Usually we have less business left. We are going to tell the association that we have more goods than expected to bring them, ”says Myriam Attias. The event will therefore make one more happy!
