Hawaii: only centenarians allowed to smoke in 2024?

Democrat Richard Creagan has submitted a bill to the local parliament that aims to gradually increase the minimum age for smoking. In 2024 you would have to be 100 years old to buy cigarettes in the American archipelago. On the other hand, he is in favor of the legalization of cannabis.

No tobacco before its centenary. This is the wish of a member of Hawaii, Richard Creagan, who wants to prohibit by 2024 the purchase of tobacco to people not centenarians. He submitted to Parliament a bill aimed at gradually increasing the minimum age for obtaining tobacco. In his proposal, the elected Democrat explains that he wants to fight “the most deadly invention in the history of humanity”.

In 2016, Hawaii had already raised the legal age for buying cigarettes to 21, such as alcohol. The bill now plans to increase it to 30 years in 2020, 40 years from 2021, 50 years in 2022 and 60 years in 2023 and finally 100 years in 2024, which would mean de facto an almost total ban on the sale of cigarettes in the territory. Note that the number of smokers in the United States is decreasing every year. It was 14% in 2017, up from 42% in 1965.

“The state is obliged to protect the health of the public”

For this deputy, who admits to having smoked to keep himself awake during his shifts when he was an intern in medicine, “the state is obliged to protect the health of the public”. This amazing bill excludes electronic smoking devices, cigars and chewing tobacco, all of which he sees as safer alternatives. Tobacco is “more deadly, more dangerous and more addictive than any prescription drug,” he told. Surprisingly, the member is openly in favor of the legalization of cannabis, which he considers much less addictive and dangerous to health. The bill, supported by other deputies, is expected to be heard this week by the Parliament’s health committee.
