This summer, the French plan to spend 2200 euros per household for their holidays

For the summer of 2019, the French will change their summer vacation habits by choosing, for example, to travel to several destinations over the two weeks of rest they will take. The budget they will allocate to these vacations will be up 10% compared to last year.

The French want to have fun this summer. According to the holiday barometer *, they plan to spend 2201 euros per household (the average household in France is 2.2 people), a figure up 10% year on year. With this forecast, they are at the top of the European basket, ahead of Spain (1,798 euros, +8%) and behind Germany (2,467 euros, +4%), in particular.

Accommodation, leisure, transport, they will therefore put more of their hands in their pockets and will be more than one in two to stay in France for the occasion, out of the 69% who plan to take a vacation. Regarding the destinations chosen, they should be 62% to favor the seaside, we learn, where they will go mainly by car. It should also be noted that the countryside and the mountains are gaining ground and will welcome more holidaymakers this summer than in previous years.

Young people trust online reviews more

“This thrust of the mountains and the countryside is accompanied by a new trend of staged holidays”, analysis for the Parisian/Today in France Emmanuel Legeron, deputy general manager of Europ Assistance. He explains that more and more French people are traveling to several destinations during their vacation time, which will last on average over two weeks (compared to 1.8 weeks on average in Europe). On the scale of the barometer, only Brazilians go on vacation longer than the French over the summer period.

In order of their favorite destination in France, according to the online booking site Kayak, Provence-Alpes-Côte-D’azur, Brittany, Corsica as well as Occitanie and Aquitaine make up the top 5. To stay there, holidaymakers will mostly opt for seasonal rentals, rather than hotel accommodation. 44% of them will rent an apartment or a house, when the European average is 34%. , according to the Orchestra-Amadeus-Travel companies barometer, Spain, Greece, Egypt or even further afield the United States, Canada or Mauritius will be popular destinations. Note also the very strong growth in reservations to Tanzania, +135% increase over one year. During the holidays, if they have different destinations and desires, the French mostly agree on one point: they want to completely disconnect from their work, we also learn from the Ipsos barometer.

“Young French people under the age of 35 anticipate their holidays less”, we can also read in this barometer. Indeed, 26% of them book less than a month in advance, compared to 15% among seniors. Also, young vacationers are more sensitive to online reviews, photos or ratings of trust given to the host who will receive them.

*Study carried out by the Ipsos Institute, at the request of Europ Assistance, on a representative sample of 12,000 people in Europe (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Austria, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Poland and Portugal), in the United States and Brazil from March 18 to April 10, 2019.
