CO2 emissions at their lowest for thirty years in Europe

“The European Union is proving that reducing emissions and growing the economy can go hand in hand,” said Frans Timmermans, Commission Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal. .

It’s not because the readings are from before the pandemic. The European Union’s greenhouse gas emissions fell last year to their lowest level in three decades. While the European GDP increased by 1.5%, the emissions of the Twenty-Seven fell by 3.7%, indicates the annual report from Brussels on the progress of the fight against climate change. In total, they have been reduced by 24% compared to the 1990 level.

An encouraging signal welcomed by Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the Commission responsible for: “The European Union is proving that reducing emissions and growing the economy can go hand in hand.» However, he added, “We need to step up our efforts across all sectors of the economy to achieve our common goal of climate neutrality by 2050.”

In detail, emissions covered by the European emissions trading system (ETS, factories and thermal power stations) recorded their largest reduction, of 9.1%, or some 152 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, compared to 2018. This drop is mainly due to the reduction of almost 15% in pollution from the electricity sector, thanks to the replacement of coal-fired production by renewable energies and gas-fired power plants. Emissions from industry, for their part, fell by almost 2%. On the other hand, those not covered by the quota system, coming from industry, transport, construction, agriculture and waste, have not recorded any notable change.
