Fortnite has lost over 60% of its players on Apple devices

Epic Games has filed a summary court order to request the return of its flagship game to the App Store. He points to “irreparable harm”.

The video game Fortnite must re-enter Apple’s app store immediately. This is the request of the lawyers of the Epic Games studio in a summary filed Friday in the United States. The latter falls within the scope taken by Apple from its App Store. “All Epic Games Wants is for the Court to Stop Apple’s Retaliation‘, who withdrew Fortnite and three other studio games from its app store on August 13. For Epic, this measure is likely to lead to “irreparable harmfor the company, evidenced by the drop in the number of players on iPhone and iPad.

Epic Games thus affirms that the number of people who play daily at Fortnite on Apple devices tumbled from “more than 60%since August 13. “Epic may never see these players again“, pleads the lawyers of the studio. This sudden disaffection is easily explained. The players of Fortnite compete together, whether they play from a console, a PC or a smartphone. But they must have the same version of the game.

However, on August 13, Apple blocked updates to Fortnite on its devices and prevents newcomers from downloading the application. As a result, users of Fortnite on iPhone and iPad can only play with each other, . “This decision broke Fortnite“, write the lawyers in the complaint.

A third of Fortnite downloads come from the AppStore

To support this argument, Epic Games reveals for the first time the weight of Apple devices in its ecosystem. We learn that 116 million people have downloaded the game on iPhone or iPad since its release in 2018, i.e. a third of registered users. Nothing theoretically prevents them from accessing the latest version of Fortnite from a PC or console. But Epic reveals that “63% of Fortnite users on Apple devices only play it on Apple devices. The harm done to these people is significant. Epic received countless consumer complaints (…): parents who wanted to play with their children, gamers who invested time and money, and people who wanted to connect with others across the world.»

Epic Games lawyers also argue that Apple’s decision hinders the studio’s ambition to create a “metaverse», a persistent connected virtual universe where video games mingle with social networking and entertainment. “Smartphones are central in the development of metaverses, as they allow consumers to connect to them from anywhere“, write the lawyers. Apple’s decisionhinders Epic’s desire to evolve Fortnite into the metaverse” and “stands in the way of Epic’s efforts to position itself on this new technological frontier.»

Judge Yvonne Gonzales Rogers, responsible for settling the dispute between Apple and Epic Games, will she be sensitive to these arguments? On August 24, the reinstatement of Fortnite on the AppStore. EpicGames”seems to have put himself in this difficult positionby bypassing Apple’s payment system, which is prohibited by the platform, and “has not proven to have suffered irreparable harm“, she explained in her decision. But the judge had prevented Apple from extending its retaliation to , created by Epic Games and used by a myriad of studios around the world.

A new hearing will take place on September 28.
