THE DECISION-MAKERS TALK – Quentin Périnel receives a personality from the economic world over a coffee. Nicolas Bustamante, co-founder of Doctrine, is the guest of the Talk Décideurs du Figaro.

Doctrine claims to be “the Google of French Law.” Beyond image and expression, this translates the ambition of this French “legal tech” company and that of its co-founder Nicolas Bustamante, whose objective is that French law be the most transparent possible. “We organize legal information and we make it available to all lawyers, litigants, as well as all people who have a legal need, specifies Nicolas Bustamante. The idea is to make accessible on the web all the notions of Law which are often complex and opaque. In other words, to ensure that the maxim “No one is supposed to ignore the law” can really exist.

Official Journal, circulars, various legal news… Today thousands of lawyers use Doctrine every day as well as 400,000 litigants. “We have gone from three employees four years ago to 85 today,” explains Nicolas Bustamante. If its service meets a real need, the National Bar Council and the Paris Bar have filed a complaint against the start-up, considering the personal data of lawyers manipulated without their knowledge.

However, Doctrine has retained the confidence of its investors. “As soon as you are a digital player and enter a monopolistic market, there are tensions and exasperations, and it is the duty of any digital player to do pedagogy”, specifies Nicolas Bustamante, adding that today, Doctrine operates “like a big company…with a legal director, in particular.”
