Art therapy to fight against suffering at work

FIGARO DEMAIN – Companies are turning to the know-how of artists in order to fight against the malaise of employees. Art would humanize workspaces and would be a factor of social cohesion.

“A traffic accident in 2014 stole four years of my life from me,” says Nicolas, an independent artist. It brought me closer to my children, and more importantly, to the life I wanted to lead.” The 38-year-old former boss sold his communications business, founded in 2001, last year. He has since denounced the abuses caused by social networks while making these online platforms a real source of inspiration. “In my work, I satirize myself,” he comments.

Proof of his success, the artist has more than 23,000 subscribers on his Instagram account stillunestp. His favorite playground: the street. This graffiti enthusiast has taken numerous fines. But, more than one trick up his sleeve, he also collaborates with brands. On one condition: to remain in line with its values. An environmental activist, the artist is ready to refuse tempting contracts offered by polluting companies. Thus, collaborations are not always simple. “Sometimes you have to compromise, but both parties have to come to terms with it,” he says.

An intermediary between these two actors, sometimes irreconcilable, is necessary. Artwork in promises, founded in 2017 by Adeline Cubères and Samuel Goupil, plays this role. The young shoot meets the needs of companies in artistic projects while collaborating with artists with strong convictions. “They act as a buffer between us and the companies in order to find a consensus that respects both points of view, assures Nicolas. Without this intermediary, some projects would not succeed.” Artwork in promises delivers to companies, but also to individuals, a tailor-made work produced by the most appropriate artist to meet the demand.

“The idea is to allow the artist maximum freedom and creativity in the production of the work”, specifies Adeline Cubères. Part of the budget envelope, paid by the company to the service provider, is paid to the artist. He is remunerated in a variable way according to his notoriety, the raw materials used or the surface worked. “The advantage, adds the founder, is that the work is sold before being designed. This prevents artists from advancing money and producing works unnecessarily.

“As soon as there was civilization, there was art”

The objective of these companies is, therefore, to increase the well-being of employees. As a priority, they seek by all means to respond to this new challenge. From sports to telecommuting, through meditation sessions or even concierge services; companies are ready to implement the best solutions to attract and retain talent. But, who would have thought that art would be a factor of well-being at work acclaimed by companies? Who would have even imagined that these two universes – a priori completely different – can they ever get along? Probably not many people! And yet, it is growing.

“Art gives free rein to everyone’s imagination, argues the independent artist. Each employee can make it their own and do what they want with it. Art makes it easier to connect with others. It creates social ties and team cohesion. It also allows questioning and questioning is a form of emotion that needs to be expressed. Corporate art therapy is possible!”

Possible, even for those who are not sensitive to it, according to Adeline Cubères. “Employees benefit from the benefits of art. Colors reduce stress and fatigue. Art humanizes offices and makes them warmer. In business, it is not only humans who cross paths but also emotions. Art accompanies living together. As soon as there was civilization, there was art,” she concludes. Artwork in Promess even plans, in the near future, to open the project to performing arts such as dance and theatre.
