Come and get into the fastest today. Take your own beer

The ICHEP conference of physicists, the largest meeting of scientists in the field, was to take place in Prague these days. The original pandemic has changed completely, at least I can be covered by more people, including at home.

One of the small and unexpected consequences of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic will be the change in the world of scientific conferences. In particular, travel space to replace virtual space. Definitely not, great experiment still.

One of his rounds will take place these days in Prague as part of the regular conference of physicists ICHEP (International Conference on High Energy Physics, ie the International Conference of High Energy Physics). Her physics was completely canceled and the conference is online.

Whatever one big advantage, many more people can now fit in. The ICHEP Traditional Conference offers a wide accompanying program for the public, and getting to it can sometimes be quite a problem. This year should not be a problem.

The scientific program began on July 28, officially launched on August 3. The main program of the public will be posted on YouTube on Wednesday, August 5, early in the afternoon. Links to individual segments can be found on the conference page. The program will, for understandable reasons, be in English.

At two o’clock in our time, a virtual inspection of the large ATLAS detector in the tunnel of the LHC accelerator under the CERN center begins. All participants in the virtual tour can ask questions to the experts present. Let’s see how it will work in practice.

During the afternoon of August 5, the premiere of the film A Day with Particles will follow, in which we will spend a typical day of a Czech physicist. A new broadcast from Great Britain, specifically from the Badminton wheel, has prepared interesting physical experiments, which I can try with them. This will be followed by Topher Whit’s program, which will show us how our machines teach me how to understand the forest.

After him, the point will be a purely esk: Martin Ryb from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University will talk about the physics of beer. He has prepared several experiments, which he and I can try at home with. Two full bottles and three full cans are essential.

If anyone would prefer a personal meeting with physics and art, this opportunity, on August 6, 2020, will be streamed by the Cross Club crack from the CERN audiovisual show Colliderscope Music by DJ Lawrence Lee from Harvard University (USA). The transfer will be preceded by a program with physical experiments prepared in cooperation with Charles University, BUT in Prague and the group divadlo asn divadlo fyziky (DiF).

What did you drink about…

As part of the conference, it was held on August 3 by Barry Barish, the winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2017, about exploring the universe with the help of gravitational waves, which you can embark on.

So far, the most important scientific result, which was published during the conference, was the announcement of new names about the breeding of the Higgs boson. The results of the ATLAS and CMS experiment with a relatively high probability, but not full certainty (approximately 3 sigma), indicate that the Higgs boson is decomposed into two muons. This was expected, but it was not experimentally documented.

This again confirms that the Higgsv boson is bred according to the assumptions of the so-called standard model. The discovery of this fact unfortunately did not allow physicists to approach the phenomenon that the Standard Model cannot explain, including some completely fundamental questions of contemporary physics. This is one of the reasons why scientists hope that they will be able to gain support for the construction of a new generation quickly, which should enable them to detect some small inconsistencies in the breeding of the Higgs boson.
