Shift reality headsets should become a common product of consumer electronics and handy accessories for sweat and laptops. Acer, in collaboration with Microsoft, introduced the first such hardware. Whether spring has given rise will depend on prices and especially the speed and creativity of development.
Acer managed one surprise in New York – it introduced its own headset for a shifting reality. They collaborated with Microsoft, or the same team behind the Microsoft HoloLens headset.
While HoloLens is a transparent headset and the image is rendered in a real environment, the headset from Acer is not transparent, so you can only see the rendered environment – you might like HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. The reason for this case is not at all about the change of realities and not virtual realities, in a short interview was introduced by Greg Sullivan from Microsoft.
The headset offers generous space around, so I didn’t have a problem with glasses – this is a great advantage compared to the StarVR headset, for example.
There are several approaches. We can complete the actual physical environment with virtual interacting elements, and the result is a shifting reality – it will augmented reality. That’s how HoloLens works. Or we can virtually complement and influence elements of physical reality, and the result is thus a shifted reality – this time it is an augmented virtuality. And that’s the first headset from Acer. From a physical point of view, for example, the position of the headset and therefore your head in six degrees of freedom (movement in those axes and tilts and swivels around each of them), the movement of the controls in your hands or the movement of your hands, Sullivan explains.
The first possibility of interaction with the help of movement on a gauze gesture is one of the functions that the headset from Acer takes over from HoloLens and thus differs from competing headsets for virtual reality. Use the treasure? Just click on the button in the menu and click on the controls for vbr. Just look at a certain place in a virtual environment and teleport to it virtually with one press of a button. All you have to do is select the letter on the virtual keyboard and click on the confirmation button (in our case it was button A on the control from the XBox) unexpectedly fast. The monitoring works surprisingly accurately and, as a way of operating on us, made it very natural after a few minutes. The view of the virtual window with MS Edge can be gently zoomed with one joystick, the other scrolled through the web pages.
The answer to the question of whether applications developed for HTC Vive or Oculus Rift can be used with the new headset is not. The answer to the question of compatibility with HoloLens applications is significantly positive – since they use the same Windows Mixed Reality environment, HoloLens applications with some minor rights can also be used with an Acer headset. Of course, only if it makes sense and the absence of an insight into physical reality is not easy.
The headset is now called Acer Mixed Reality head-Mounted Display and has no specified end price or exact date put on commercial sale. At the moment, pieces made for software development have been made, and only after it will be used for them will they become commercially available products. Connect to the computer with an HDMI cable for image transmission and a USB cable for data transmission from integrated sensors – accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, zoom sensor or motion tracking system.
The image quality is never the same, the image consists of two LCD displays with a resolution of 1440 x 1440 pixels (vnman image has a resolution of 2880 x 1440 pixels), but due to the fairly wide observation noise, the raster of the display is noticeable. This is especially true in video playback applications (private cinema and with a 200 ″ screen). The image refresh rate is 90 Hz.
The headset can be flipped away at any time, so you can’t take it off.
According to Sullivan, the headset will also be used for regular work in Windows instead of the monitor, which could be interesting, for example, on the road. However, it will be in one desktop, the Windows environment is not yet prepared for this form factor – the use of all the possibilities of the headset will be a matter of individual applications. Among the first applications, there are various games, playful multimedia 3D and 360 videos and photos, or virtual tours of various cities.
Similar products with Microsoft are also being prepared by Asus, Dell, HP, or Lenovo – the technical parameters of individual models will differ, but they will all work on the Microsoft platform and will be able to use the same applications.
